Wood-Burning ‘Closed System Fireplaces’, also referred to as ‘Slow Combustion’, ‘Closed Combustion’ or ‘Stoves’ are designed to effortlessly burn wood rather than other solid fuels, as the airflow in the unit has been specially built to get the best performance from seasoned dry wood. Internally, a wood-burning fireplace does not have a grate or ash pan on the floor of the fireplace.

Slow Combustion however is a thing of the past, as most modern ‘Closed System Fireplaces’ are design to meet exacting standards, and burn clean and carbon-neutral.

Far more efficient than an ‘Open Fireplace’, over 75% of the heat is generally returned in to the room as opposed to being lost up the chimney, burning wood in a ‘Closed System Fireplaces’ is economical and generates more heat directly to the room.

Fireplaces are rated in kilowatt (Kw) output and this figure gives you an indication of the heat output capability of the unit, enabling you to determine whether it is sized correctly to achieve the desired results. You should never choose a fireplace solely for it looks and design – there are many other considerations that you need to take into account. It is important that the fireplaces output capacity matches your actual heating needs.

Fireplace output ratings are sometimes provided as nominal (average) or maximum or a range. While you fireplace may provide 10kW output at its maximum, it is not a good idea to burn it at maximum for long periods. The physical size of the firebox will determine the maximum heat output of the fireplace, for a particular period of time, when comparing one fireplace against another fireplace.

Choosing the right size of fireplace is key to high performance and energy efficiency. But it is also important to consider where the fireplace will be placed. Fireplaces that are too large may increase the risk of fire. Always consider nearby hazards, such as flammable materials like wallpaper, curtains, furniture, and similar.

As an approximation, 1 kilowatt will heat +/- 30 cubic meters, or 1 kilowatt will heat +/- 10 square meters.
